Mara has been EU Public Affairs Advisor in Brussels since September 2019, where she represents the interests of the Northern Netherlands together with Dirk Frouws. Drenthe, Groningen and Friesland are together with the municipalities of Assen, Emmen, Groningen, Leeuwarden and Súdwest-Fryslân united in the Northern Netherlands Alliance (SNN). Within SNN’s Public Affairs team, Mara is responsible for maintaining ties between the northern provinces, the five northern municipalities and the European institutions. She does this on various dossiers such as the circular economy and energy. In addition, Mara is also the point of contact for its own provincial employees and for third parties.
Mara’s academic background is a Master of Science in European Public Policy from University College London and a Bachelor’s degree in International Relations and International Organization from the University of Groningen. Prior to her position at SNN, Mara worked for the European Commission and the World Bank in areas such as digitalisation, sustainable urbanization and the absorption of EU funds.
